US government publishes decree and imposes additional 40% tariff on certain Brazilian products

The United States government has published a decree formalizing the imposition of extra tariffs on Brazilian products sold to the country.

In the end, the tariff imposed is 40%, in addition to the 10% previously announced, and covers certain Brazilian products and not the entire export list.

Almost 700 products were excluded from the new tariff, such as coal, natural gas, oil and oil products, as well as fertilizers and agricultural and wood products, such as orange juice and orange pulp, Brazil nuts, raw mica, wood pulp, sawn or chipped tropical timber, and sisal or other fiber yarns.

Coffee and beef, however, items with significant exports to the US, were not included in the exemptions.

According to a decree published on the White House website, the new tariffs will take effect on August 6.

In Brazil, the Minister of Development, Industry, and Trade stated at a press conference that he is working to ensure that the rate reduction applies to all and that the tariff is unjustified, given that the US has a trade surplus with Brazil.
